doin’ what you can

That's more than you think

This kind of service is a bit more difficult to describe, but I seem to find myself doing more of it every day. It's a category of activity that has more to do with volunteerism and the local community, and less with what a paying client needs on any given day.

I call this "intervention" because we all have the ability to insert ourselves in a process in which we believe. For me, that process is about community betterment, co-operation, and the willingness to commit to aligning forces that can contribute to a greater good.

This is a hard thing for many people to do because it requires a streak of altruism, and altruism is not always affordable, for a lot of reasons. Everyone is compelled by circumstance to budget their time and energy between a range of life-prolonging obligations, which in most cases involve job and family. But in the end, I believe that the communications effort, and the skills anyone brings to life, can be used outside our regular paying gig to do something truly great. This invariably involves working with other people on things that usually don't make a lot of money.

I take this pursuit quite seriously, and it sometimes means we miss financial opportunities that others may not. But for the things I believe in, that price is worth it, because life is about more than selling another pair of shoes.
